Vocational service is a way in which Rotary develops the ideal of service in society through all professions.
Rotarians uphold high ethical standards in their professional work and, conversely, have the opportunity to apply their vocational skills to address societal challenges and needs through Rotary initiatives.
What does this mean?
Rotarians are encouraged to:
- Develop and maintain high ethical standards in business and professions, recognize the value of all useful occupations, and dignify the role of the Rotarian as an opportunity to serve society.
- Apply the ideal of service in personal, business, and community life.
- Promote international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a worldwide network of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
“Develop, apply, and promote” are words that might easily sound like empty rhetoric.
Paul Harris wrote: “Every Rotarian is a connecting link between Rotary ideals and their profession or occupation.”
Vocational service is the way Rotary actually serves society. Ethics and professionalism are the shared responsibilities of both the Rotary club and its members. The club’s role is to set goals and implement projects where Rotarians can contribute to society and their community. Clubs develop projects that allow members to use their professional talents to serve the community.
The members’ role is to lead themselves and act in their profession according to Rotary principles and support the club’s projects. During club visits, I see the important projects being carried out in our district. One that stood out to me was in Hanko, where the club leads a project on garbage bins that call the waste truck when full. It was such an amusing initiative that I hope the club will write more about it someday.
As a governor, I could highlight hundreds of commendable efforts. Thank you all! Service above self, right? Look at your fellow club members and ask: what could you contribute to our club from your profession?
The Haapsalu Rotary Club has recently had very interesting club evenings, visiting the workplaces of fellow Rotarians. In Viimsi, I heard an opinion confirmed in Porvoo – clubs have so many knowledgeable Rotarians that we could offer much more to society by acting as mentors.
Many of us have brought our professional expertise to Rotary development: Anne Hütt in training, Marit Mikson and Essi Isomäki in communications, Irmeli Viherluoto-Lindström in leadership, helping to make the right decisions. Heldur Allese is known as a travel organizer – by the way, his company Fiesta Reisid is currently offering discounts to Rotarians. This list could go on endlessly.
Thank you to everyone who contributes their professional knowledge to make Rotary a great organization.

ELECTION OF THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR FOR THE 2027-28 ROTARY YEAR
At the district autumn meeting on 18.10.2024, the district governor election committee was appointed. Clubs were then invited to submit proposals for the position of district governor for the 2027-28 Rotary year.
Four proposals were received by the deadline, which were truly wonderful and gratifying. One candidate withdrew their application.
All candidates were interviewed by the election committee. Each candidate was an excellent, dedicated Rotarian with extensive experience and expertise in club activities and Rotary in general, as well as in different communities and organizations. The applicants had varying levels of experience working at the district level.
After discussions and evaluations, the election committee decided to select Anne Kuusio from the Ekenäs Rotary Club as the governor-nominee-designate.
Anne Kuusio has extensive experience in Rotary roles at the Ekenäs Rotary Club, District 1420, and the Finland and Estonia Multidistrict level. According to Rotary International (RI) rules, clubs have two weeks from the announcement of the selection to submit an objection if desired.
FINLAND ROTARY MARK OF MERIT APPLICATION
All clubs can submit their candidates until January 27.
Please send applications to my email address: aunepast@gmail.com no later than 20:00 on January 27th. Status and statement of the medal: Rotary.ee.

Invitation to Saaremaa’s basketball competitions
This year’s rotary basketball tournament will be held at the Kuressaari sports center on March 22, 2025.
Since in recent years several clubs have had problems assembling teams, this year it is possible to include a maximum of 2 non-Rotarians over the age of 50 in the team. Notify your clubs and mark the date in the calendar.
Let me know your decision to participate by the end of this month. I want to believe that we can still put together at least 5 teams!

Registration for the Rotary 120 event is now open!
Rotary celebrates its 120th anniversary this year. We will celebrate it spectacularly in a joint event for all of Finland (including Estonia and Åland) on May 24, 2025 in Tampere-talo. We look forward to seeing you all Rotarians and friends of Rotary!
The theme of the event is peace. It is one of Rotary’s seven top themes and unfortunately relevant right now. However, peace is a basic condition for doing all good in this world. Without peace, you cannot drill wells, promote literacy or support local economies.
The celebration day consists of a celebration seminar and an evening party. There will be top speakers, friendship, doing good, joy and great emotions.
Come and celebrate 120 years of Rotary – let’s make this the event of the century together!
