OUR GOALS IN GAMBIA – safe hobby to children – supporting local entrepreneur – food/eggs to the children – avoiding asylum

Our aim is to help the children in a football team in Gambia, to be able to continue their football hobby by registering the team. Provide nourishment for them through our chicken farmer entrepreneur Dawda Manga. He is an ex-soldier and will also educate them to avoid the dangerous path of asylum seekers via Libya where so many people suffer and even die. We want to spread the message that it is not a great option to come to Europe. The project aims also to create business opportunities to local people and more sustainable life in their own homeland!

Our Gambia story started in 2017 when my wife Heli and I visited this beautiful country and its people for the first time. I had to ”digest” the idea of travelling to Africa few years before we actually got there, travelling to Africa with Crohn´s disease makes it a bit more complicated. On december 2017 we met local coaches and travel guides Sam and Ratti and they introduced their football team to us, almost 40 children altogether. It clicked right away, we saw the impact of having a hobby and what it means, and felt it in our hearts. We sponsored the team with a real football, one they did not have, and in return we were greeted with genuine smiles and happy faces. I joined Rotary club Samppalinna Turku, Finland in 2018 and that was the start of a new Rotary project, Children of Gambia.
While we were in Gambia 2018, we went to local Rotary meeting which is a great way to connect by the way! There we met Ian Dow and Nona Lamb from Rotary Club Aberdeen St Nicholas, Scotland. As pictures tell you below, we did some charity together, I was amazed how we worked together and achieved great goals. That gave me confident that this can be a real Rotary campaign which is now happening! Thank you Rotary!

SAM´S DREAM
Sam, the head coach has one big dream. To keep the children off the streets and give them a good and safe hobby.

STEPS / GOALS

  1. To help the team to get an official registration in order to play in tournaments and have more benefit from their hobby (est. 2019-2020)
  2. To help a local to build a business, possibly later businesses by raising micro loans. Poultry farmer started in may 2019. This company can do co-operation with the team and will be able to help the team to get better food which is vital.
  3. Share information about the dangers of the asylum. This is done by Dawda Manga, ex-soldier and currently a poultry farmer entrepreneur.
  4. f you feel you want to help us, please contact me. We want to thank the generous people who have already given their support for this important mission! Your help will encourage the Gambians and us to continue this journey!

    Our proud partners:
Rotary club of Turku Samppalinna, Finland  (The Gambian children project)
Resimator Oy, Turku (partner with micro-loans on april 2019)

    Yours sincerely,

Gambian lapset

TAVOITTEEMME PAIKAN PÄÄLLÄ – turvallinen harrastus – parempi elämä – pakolaisuuden välttäminen

Projektin tavoitteena on auttaa lasten ja nuorten jalkapallojoukkuetta hyvän harrastuksen avulla myös saamaan eväitä parempaan elämään ja opettaa heitä välttämään pakolaisuus. Todella moni harkitsee pakolaisuutta, koska Gambiassa on erittäin huono työllisyystilanne. Reitti Libyan kautta Eurooppaan sisältää hengenvaarallisia elementtejä kidnappauksesta, hyväksikäytöstä, orjuudesta ja kuolemasta. Eurooppaan tulo ei ole hyvä ratkaisu. Autetaan Gambialaisia luomaan yhdessä parempi elinympäristö, jotta he voisivat nauttia elämästä omassa maassaan. Meillä on erittäin asiantunteva ammattilainen luennoimassa lapsille.

Näin syntyi projekti Gambian lapset – Children of Gambia. Hyvä Rotarit!

SAMIN HAAVE

Samin, joukkueen päävalmentajan suuri haave on pitää lapset poissa kadulta ja tarjota heille hyvä ja turvallinen harrastus.

PROJEKTIN TAVOITTEET / EDISTYMINEN

  1. Auttaa joukkuetta rekisteröitymään, jotta he voivat pelata turnauksissa ja saada uusia mahdollisuuksia (2019-2020) Auttaa paikallista/paikallisia yrittäjyyden tukemisessa.
  2. Kanafarmari aloitti huhtikuussa 2019. Yrittäjä on luvannut tehdä yhteistyötä ja auttaa jalkapallojoukkuetta saamaan parempaa ja ravitsevampaa ruokaa. Tällä hetkellä noin 85 % kanoista tuodaan ulkomailta Gambiaan kalliimmalla hinnalla, joten kotimaiselle kanalle on suuri kysyntä.
  3. Tiedottaa lapsia ja heidän perheitään siirtolaisuudesta ja siihen liittyvistä vaaroista. Puhujana entinen sotilas Dawda Manga.
