The water retention project carried out by the Water Protection Association of the Vantaa River and Helsinki Region (VHVSY) is progressing actively in 2026. The aim of the work is to reduce flood and drought risks in the Lepsämänjoki River and improve water quality by implementing nature-based water retention solutions in the small tributaries in the upper part of the Lepsämänjoki catchment area.
Projects in Lepsämänjoki
During the summer of 2026, the final water retention sites of the ongoing project in the Lepsämänjoki catchment area will be completed, while discussions are being held with landowners about the possibility of implementing new sites. The aim is to identify sites that could be included in an application for EU agricultural funding in autumn 2026. At present, the biggest challenge to advancing the water retention project is obtaining the consent of landowners.
Palojoki project
In the Palojoki project, nature-based flow-retention structures are being constructed in Uotinoja, and a boundary ditch on Terrisuo, owned by the Tuusula Parish, is being dammed to retain water. As a separate project, the restoration of Rannikonmäenkoski is being promoted, with funding being sought from the fisheries sector.
Making an impact through a master’s thesis at Aalto University
At the beginning of June, a student will begin a master’s thesis at the association through Aalto University on the topic “Geospatial analysis of floodplains in the Vantaa River catchment area and their use as nature-based water retention structures.” The study will use geospatial analysis and modelling to identify areas where water retention would be most effective. The results will help target funding as efficiently as possible to sites where retaining runoff water would provide the greatest benefits.
Rotary support for the project
The support provided by Rotarians for the projects has been extremely important, and the association is grateful for the funding raised so far. In 2026, Rotary clubs will also have the opportunity to participate in practical environmental work by independently organising clean-up events and volunteer work to remove invasive alien species. VHVSY is happy to provide information about suitable sites and aims in the future to organise volunteer work for communities interested in restoration activities.
Long-term goals
In the longer term, the goal is to develop even broader cooperation to promote water protection. The need to have a stronger influence on municipal land-use planning, the preservation of natural areas and the protection of water bodies is continuously increasing as land use changes rapidly.
Rotarians’ support in raising awareness of the issue and influencing municipal decision-makers is important. By working together, we can find solutions that benefit both water bodies and future generations.
