In the fall of 2024, the three-part Rotary Leadership Institute in Espoo brought together Rotarians to delve deeper into the core of Rotary activities. The course modules do not need to be attended in a specific order. As a result, each training day had a slightly different group of participants, bringing diverse perspectives to the discussions and reflections. Around 15 participants from various parts of the district attended the course. Some were new Rotarians, while others had been active longer.

The training days offered an abundance of interesting topics, new ideas, and, above all, a sense of community. Skilled trainers ensured that the sessions remained interactive throughout the program.

Me as a Rotarian

The first module of the series focused on Rotary leadership, values, and fundamental pillars of operation. Discussions emphasized the inspiring role of the president in club activities and the importance of a shared action plan. Particularly valuable were the reflections on the community’s unifying power and the significance of service projects. Participants provided concrete examples of how Rotary activities can be personally meaningful and socially impactful. Group work opened new perspectives and strengthened the sense of togetherness among the participants.

My Rotary Club

The second module concentrated on leadership in volunteer activities, communication challenges, and membership recruitment methods. Participants discussed the need for club communication plans and how a concise “elevator pitch” can attract new members. The session also sparked enthusiasm with examples from the Rotary Foundation’s international projects, showcasing the broad impact of Rotary activities. The variety of backgrounds and viewpoints enriched the discussions, and by the end of the day, participants highlighted the sense of community and positive atmosphere as key motivators for their involvement in Rotary.

My Expanding Rotary World

The third training day guided participants through strategic planning and club development. Improving public image was tackled through group work, examining the importance of communication and tangible actions. The day also generated creative ideas, such as using role-playing games during club meetings. Catchphrases like “Do you want to be part of something meaningful?” and “Don’t go to Tinder, join Rotary!” emerged during the session. Once again, the diverse group of participants contributed new insights and practices that could be applied in their respective clubs.

Shared Insights

A sense of community and open discussions were the highlights of all the training sessions. Participants felt that group work and exchanging ideas across club boundaries were the best parts of the training. Additionally, the course offered practical tips for preparing action plans and recruiting new members. The global and local impact of Rotary activities became particularly tangible through the presentations of foundation projects.

Sharing new ideas and methods strengthened the participants’ commitment to and enthusiasm for Rotary activities. The rotating group of participants and trainers brought a unique dynamic to each day.

Thank you to all participants and organizers—this fall’s training days were a shared success!
