The Rotary clubs of Rovaniemi are starting the construction of the Northern Lights wicket. The much-needed, hoped-for and loved Northern Lights wicket is supposed to be put into use by mid-October. The new wicket will be built at the same place in Rotary Forest Park as the wicket that was destroyed as a result of arson.

The work starts with spreading stone ash and renovating the foundations. Stone ash improves accessibility and makes maintenance of the area easier. In the spring, the Rotarians worked together with Napa KP in Norvajärvi to dry the trees needed by the log cabin for construction. When the new grills are made and the supplies are fetched, everything is ready for the construction of the new wicket.

The decision to build a new wicket was made because there were so many encouraging messages from citizens. The Northern Lights wicket, which was chosen as the city center work of the year, was also very popular and there has been a lot of hope for something new. “Rotarians want to do good together with the townspeople, and we are rebuilding the northern lights wicket as a group,” say Rovaniemi rotary club presidents Manu Pajuluoma and Jaana Koskela.

The first work sites also open to the public are on Saturday 19 August from 9 o’clock. Work continues on Sunday at the same time. In addition to active Rotarians, everyone who wants to participate in the construction of a local recreation area for the joy of the people of Rovaniemi is welcomed to the work.

You can register as a volunteer worker to Juri Laurila, who is leading the project, by sending an email to juri.laurila@gmail.com.
