On World Polio Day, 24.10, Rovaniemi Rotary Club goes to Rovaniemi Prisma to collect money for the End Polio Now fundraiser. Donate to the collection too, because every euro means a lot.
Rotary’s campaign to eliminate polio from the world began in 1985. At that time, about 1,000 people fell ill every day from the disease caused by the polio virus, which means that about 350,000 children, often under the age of 5, were paralyzed or died each year due to polio. In the 1980s, polio was present in 125 countries.
Rotarians’ work to eradicate polio will only end when no child is at risk of getting sick from the wild polio virus. Rotarians have made that promise. There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented by vaccination. Currently, since 1988, we have succeeded in reducing polio cases by 99.9%, but the work is not finished yet. Only two countries in the world are endemic for polio, i.e. the disease occurs locally continuously. Until we succeed in eradicating polio once and for all, every child is at risk of contracting the disease.
Polio has not completely disappeared from Finnish society either, because there are still people among us who were crippled by polio as children. However, new cases are no longer expected in Finland due to comprehensive vaccination programs. The only threat to this situation is a decrease in vaccination coverage.
See you at the fundraiser and do good together!
