INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n My name is Tommi Sundqvist, the president of Turku Samppalinna Rotary club (2021-2022). I come from Kaarina, southwest Finland and I am the leader of The children of Gambia project, funded by Rotary charity organisation. After a short info about what the project is about, I am proud to introduce our amazing team. The 3rd season is done together with young Rotaract leaders, which makes this season very unique.<\/p>\n PROJECT IN A NUTSHELL<\/strong><\/p>\n Our primary goals: HOBBY FOR CHILDREN \u2013 FOOD CARE \u2013 AVOIDING ASYLUM<\/p>\n Our goal is to support local children and football team in Gambia to have a safe hobby, and to build a small network, that can provide them good nourishment and even work. These actions, together with information of the dangers of Asylum, will hopefully stop some of them from becoming Asylum seekers in Europe. As you can understand these problems are so big, that we need help. The Rotary organisation is our bedrock, that provides the help we need. \nRatti (manager) has been in a serious car accident, where the car was totally ruined. He hit his head badly, but is now recovering slowly. The treatment for headache was ice.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nRotaracts (Sai, Roosa) and Stefania started to plan the second food feast with Sam and Dawda.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\nDawda\u00b4s chicken has been stolen (about 130 chicken). Dawda\u00b4s message:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cBad news today! Thief’s broke the door of my poultry house and went with large number of my chickens. Burglary is in the increase in this country nowadays. I wake at 4:10am so I came to check on them omg I saw the door open some of the chickens are even outside but could hear the noise of car from a far going. I can’t believe the figures am having Tommi\ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude2d omg 110 chicken to 115 left in my farm.”<\/span>

\n<\/span>”I am speechless. I normally keep checking on my chickens all night. But honestly last night I overslept maybe from my medicine from the hospital. <\/span>Police was also visiting, police did a report and took a picture of a broken lock.”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\nFood Feast was arranged for the second time. Now we provided food for about 50 children. Dawda Manga did Facebook-live three times in that day. Everybody child got food, which was cooked by local girls. Delicious chicken, sauce, rice and some vegetables. Also BaoBab and local juice drinks were served. Everybody was happy, the spirit of community grew. We achieved the goal.<\/p>\n
\nMEMO of LIVE-meeting (Cafe Art)
\n<\/span>1. Agent program will start, where the coaches will sell Dawda\u00b4s eggs. <\/span>Aim is to find them a way to earn money.\u00a0 Investment for 300 eggs+10e shipping is 50 \u20ac from us.
\n<\/span>We have agreed on an experiment with the Rotaractors to provide eggs instead of cash. Coaches need to turn them into money. We are also trying a different responsibility theme like beach cleaning etc. against which we pay a tournament fee. Our primary goal is to make them self sufficient.
\n<\/strong>2. Roosa and Sai are having a call very soon with Ratti to go through different employment ideas. Chicken house may not work at the moment (rainy season and lack of space in his property). R and S are looking into the idea of having his own taxi, which also Ratti is very interested too. Cars, even low quality ones are very expensive. Very old Opel costs 2500,00 \u20ac.
\nWe have been discussing sending a used car instead. Shipping is about 1700,00 \u20ac (Fin-Gambia), which also explains why old cars cost more than 2000,00 \u20ac.
\n3. W<\/span>e ask the team to do something good for the environment (cleaning beaches etc.).
\n4. <\/span>How can we help Dawda? He is staying up during the night (01.00 – 06.00) so that he can guard the chickens. Could we help him to get a guard (30 \u20ac\/ month?) Rotaractors will also call Dawda and ask about the security, fences etc. Can we help with the roof for his house? His family is expecting support from their relatives (USA), but now they are not getting any support. Their new house has foundations and walls, but the roof is missing and rainy season has just started. If they don\u00b4t get a roof, it will be a disaster. At the moment they don\u00b4t have a proper place to stay so it is a very stressful situation. We are thinking of giving him a 1000,00 \u20ac loan (3-6 months) for temporary cover. Turku Samppalinna RC Board accepted the loan.
\n5. Rotaracts planting trees in Turku?
\n<\/span>6. Tommi challenged Rotaracts to think about new ways to give recognition. Today the recognitions and the fame stay inside the Rotary world. Why don\u00b4t we do it other way around? Heli Mikkola was suggesting that instead of Pins, the recipient of recognition could donate a certain sum to a good cause which is paid by either the club or Rotary Organisation. That would make our job more transparent and same time the Rotary world gets more positive publicity.<\/p>\n

\nWe are expanding the project and starting to support girls more! We will start by supporting girls’ education. Empowering girls and creating equity for them is one of the main themes of this Rotary Year for Shekhar Mehta, the President of Rotary International, so our project fits perfectly with this theme.
\nRotarian Janne Lepola has founded Loviisa school in the Gambia and that’s why he had the contact information of Musa Mendy, a retired educationist who is currently on contract at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Banjul. Tommi and Roosa had a video call with Musa who promised to find us a girl who wants to keep going to school but whose family can’t afford it.
\nWe will also start to support the education of Fatou, a daughter of the chicken farmer Dawda Manga. Fatou is 8 years old and is going to Palmamary lower basic school. \nSam and the kids of the football team have been cleaning up trashes from their local environment in the Gambia so we also wanted to do our part here in Finland. Today Rotaractors Pia and Roosa went to Ruissalo to clean up the beach together with the project leader Tommi and his wife Heli. We found lots of trashes and prevented them from ending up to the sea.<\/p>\n
\n9.9.2021
\nToday we had an online meeting with Rotarians Johanna Talikainen and Tiina Malkamo. Johanna is the Empowering girls ambassador of Rotary world zone 17. We are thinking of expanding support for girl’s education in the Gambia so that as many Finnish Rotary Clubs as possible would sponsor one girl’s education in the Gambia. Planning is still in progress so you will hopefully hear more about this in the future.<\/p>\n
\nA 15-year-old captain of the football team and some of his team mates sent us a video asking for financial support for their team mate who had injured his leg. This injury happened already in April and unfortunately it has been a series of unfortunate events. Coach Sam asked for our help already in April but the boy\u2019s family didn\u2019t want our help at that time. They took the boy to the local bone healer and the leg didn\u2019t get better. The boy\u2019s condition got worse in September and he could only lie on the floor and was in pain. He then visited the doctor and had an x-ray. The bone was in necrosis and the only option was to amputate the leg. The boy and the family were scared and didn\u2019t want the amputation.<\/p>\n
\nRotaractors Roosa and Pia together with a Rotarian Stefania called to Sam who was visiting the boy who had hurt his knee. The boy was in poor condition and we found out that it was an open fracture. We were terrified as in Finland no one has to be with an open fracture for many days because it is operated immediately. A local doctor visited every day at the boy\u2019s house and changed the bandages. We promised to do whatever we can to help. We got a few football videos from Sam\u2019s teams as \u201dthank you\u201d. We started to find out local Gambian hospitals and contacts and sent some money to the boy and his family. Dawda gave some eggs for the family.<\/p>\n
\nThe boy\u2019s situation got even worse and he had fever. We were scared as we knew he could easily develop sepsis. The family had decided to take the boy finally to the hospital and we encouraged them to do that. They arrived in the hospital and Sam went to buy medicines and get a few team mates to donate blood for the boy. We learned that there are no medicines or blood in the hospitals in Gambia.<\/p>\n
\nDawda and Sam had visited the hospital many times. We also gave some money for Ratti so that he could visit the boy and could go to the hospital by taxi. Today the doctor had given the boy a document to sign so that he agrees to proceed to the amputation. The boy didn\u2019t want to sign the paper and so the operation was cancelled. Dawda and Sam and the boy\u2019s best friend tried to do their best to support the boy and told him that this operation would keep him alive.<\/p>\n
\nToday the boy was mentally ready for the operation and Dawda\u2019s doctor friend accelerated the events so that the amputation was done today. We are so happy to hear that the operation went well. We hope that the boy\u2019s recovery can now start and that his condition would get better. We are dreaming that we could get him a good prosthesis. Apparently there are wooden prostheses in Gambia and it hurts to wear that.<\/p>\n
\nThe team has been participating in two tournaments (under 15 and under 17). This tournament was to train their team-skills.<\/p>\n
